The TMSG runs projects funded by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC). The projects currently being funded are:
Integrated Humanitarian Settlement Strategy (IHSS) The Integrated Humanitarian Settlement Strategy (IHSS) is a project to settle humanitarian entrants into the local community for which TMSG has a 5 year contract with DIAC. Settlement support is provided under IHSS to refugee families from the time of arrival up to 6 months, or possibly up to 12 months if required. This project is managed by the TMSG Coordinator, a Case Worker and the Volunteer Coordinator. Principles of IHSS service include respect for individuals and cultural values, maximization of choice and involvement in decision making, promotion of competence, and engagement in the wider community. TMSG is obligated to provide a range of services under IHSS: • Case coordination, Information and Referrals (CCIR) This includes a needs assessment (e.g. medical, housing, schooling) and making sure services and referrals are delivered in a coordinated way. • On Arrival Reception and Assistance (OARA) Families are met at the airport, taken to appropriate accommodation, provided with initial orientation and any emergency needs (medical/clothing). • Accommodation Initial accommodation is provided. Assistance in finding long term accommodation and tenancy training are also provided. • Short Term Torture and Trauma Counseling Psychological needs are assessed and if appropriate, referral to trained counselor is provided. • Volunteer Coordination Volunteer contributions are a very important part of assisting entrants to settle, and are managed as required. This could include reinforcement of tenancy training, use of public transport, English tutoring. • Advocacy and Raising Community Awareness The aim is to provide information, training sessions, advice and other supports to mainstream services, as well as to increase awareness and capacity to respond to entrants needs. Settlement Grants Program (SGP) The Settlement Grants Program provides individual and community assistance to migrants and former IHSS entrants who have arrived in Townsville in the past 5 years. Individual support is provided, as well as group information sessions. Topics presented in the information sessions may include: • parenting • budgeting • law • accessing community services such as Fire Department, Ergon Energy and Ambulance. • rights and responsibilities of tenants For more information the projects above please contact us. |
