Health Literacy Project

Health Literacy Project

Funded by the Northern Queensland Primary Health Network, the Health Literacy Project was a six-month co-design initiative led by TMSG in partnership with community members from the Somali, Central African Republic, Sudan/South Sudan, and Congolese communities.

Through a series of three workshops, participants shared their lived experiences of navigating the Australian healthcare system, discussing what they wished they had known when they first arrived and the information they believe is most important for new refugee arrivals. Together, they identified key topics including understanding the role of a GP, booking and attending appointments, medical tests, and vaccines.

These community insights informed the development of culturally relevant video scripts, which were transformed into animated videos and translated into each community’s language. Every video features a character designed specifically for that community, making the content relatable and accessible.

The project aims to strengthen foundational health literacy for newly arrived refugees by providing trusted, culturally appropriate information. The videos will be shared through social media, community leaders, settlement services, and healthcare professionals to support new arrivals in confidently accessing healthcare.
