Settlement Engagement and Transition Support (SETS)
What is SETS?
Townsville Multicultural Support Group Ltd is delivering the Settlement Engagement and Transition Support Program in Townsville as a subcontracted service provider of Multicultural Australia.
The SETS Program supports eligible humanitarian entrants, permanent migrants and other eligible migrants to address settlement needs and build greater independence, wellbeing, participation and connection within the Australian community.
The program is a needs based service. Support is tailored to the circumstances of each individual or family.
The Australian Government SETS Program aims to equip and empower eligible migrants and humanitarian entrants to address their settlement needs.
The program focuses on:
- Social participation
- Economic wellbeing
- Independence
- Personal wellbeing
- Community connectedness
SETS also fills an important gap for eligible people who may not have family, friends or other community supports available to assist them with settlement.
A Referral Based Service
Our SETS service is strongly focused on connecting eligible clients with the right service.
When you approach TMSG, our staff can discuss your settlement needs and, where appropriate, refer or connect you to government agencies, community organisations, specialist providers and other mainstream services.
For example, if you need assistance with mental health, legal matters, employment, housing, family support or education, TMSG can help you understand what services may be available and assist you to connect with the appropriate organisation.
SETS can also assist participants to access government services and programs, local government and community programs, private sector institutions and interpreting and translation services.
The objective is not simply to provide a referral. Where appropriate, TMSG aims to help eligible clients understand the service system and develop the confidence and ability to access services independently.
What does the SETS Program Provide?
TMSG provides settlement related information, advice, advocacy, assessment and referral to appropriate services.
Our role is to listen to your needs, understand your circumstances and help you identify and access the most appropriate service or organisation.
Depending on your circumstances, we may provide information and referrals relating to:
- Housing and accommodation
- Health and wellbeing
- Mental health and counselling services
- Family and relationship support
- Education and training
- English language learning
- Employment and employment services
- Skills recognition and qualifications
- Financial and welfare services
- Government services and programs
- Legal and community services
- Interpreting and translation services
- Youth services
- Family support
- Community and social connections
- Cultural and community organisations
- Volunteering and community participation
- Other mainstream and specialist services relevant to your settlement needs
The Australian Government describes SETS as providing eligible clients with settlement related information, advice, advocacy and assistance to use mainstream and other relevant services. SETS services may include individual low or medium intensity case management, group sessions, sector collaboration and community capacity building.
Who is Eligible?
SETS is available to eligible clients and groups in Australia. The program is particularly intended to prioritise people who have arrived in Australia within the last five years, people requiring urgent assistance, people experiencing significant settlement difficulties, people with low literacy or English language proficiency, people with critical settlement needs where other appropriate services are unavailable, and vulnerable groups and emerging communities.
People who have been in Australia for more than five years may also be supported in certain circumstances where they have significant settlement needs. Providers can support people outside the priority groups depending on individual needs, available resources and program requirements.
Australian citizens are not eligible for the SETS Program.
Eligibility depends on visa status and individual circumstances. There are specific eligible permanent and temporary visa categories under the SETS Program.
