The School to Work Transitions Program is funded by Queensland Department of Trade, Employment and Training (DTET).  This years project is supporting 20 students from Town High School in Townsville and explores future career pathways, builds confidence, and helps them develop a clearer understanding of their options beyond high school. The students meet with TMSG’s Project Coordinator, Nitika Sahu every fortnight at a new location for an exciting day of new experiences and learning opportunities.

Through workplace visits, guest speakers, and a career pathways workshop delivered by CQUniversity (CQU), students have gained valuable insight into different industries, education pathways, and employment opportunities. These experiences have helped students connect classroom learning with real-world careers and better understand the skills and qualifications needed to achieve their goals.

A significant outcome has been the growth in student confidence and engagement so far. Students who were initially uncertain about their future, or hesitant to participate, are now actively exploring career options, asking questions, and identifying pathways that align with their interests. Strong relationships developed between students, teachers, and the Project Officer have created a supportive environment where students feel comfortable seeking guidance and discussing their aspirations.

Workplace tours have been a particular highlight, helping students confirm existing career interests or discover new opportunities they had not previously considered. Guest speakers with relatable personal and professional experiences have also inspired students to believe their goals are achievable.

The project continues to respond to students’ individual interests, ensuring activities remain relevant and meaningful. Upcoming opportunities include additional industry visits, White Card training, First Aid certification, and work experience placements with TCC. These experiences will provide practical skills, recognised qualifications, and increased workplace readiness.

While the project is still underway, the impact is already evident. Students are demonstrating greater confidence, stronger engagement, and a clearer vision for their future, with many now taking practical steps towards further education, training, and employment pathways.
